The introductory segment of ABC’s The Checkout was an excellent informational segment introducing many unaware Australians to solar power. In this blog, Renew Energy cover several of the key points that were brought up in the segment.
The cost of solar
The Checkout segment comprehensively covered solar payback information for each major are, with Perth being one of the most favourably covered cities. This segment demonstrated that prices of a solar system in Perth in 2016 were the cheapest in Australia, while the payback period was five years – half of the payback period in Hobart, and less than the national average.
Finding the right solar company
Rather than gloss over the relevant aspects of solar systems in Australia, The Checkout segment also addressed the important need to find a solar retailer and installer dedicated to industry best practice. It was noted that small companies were as good an option as the bigger companies, and often much easier to deal with due to the fewer employees that buyers need to navigate with.Make sure to search for Renew Energy in the approved solar retailers section of the Solar Accreditation website. It is here you will find that we are one of only 59 solar retailers adhering to the best practice code of conduct, the protocol that certifies quality products, complying with consumer protection laws and the backing of systems operation well into the future. Our position as CEC-accredited retailers and installers allows for the eligibility of government solar subsidies.
Avoiding door to door salespeople
One of the key mentions of the Checkout segment was the need to disregard door-to-door salespeople. According to the Consumer Action Law Centre, buying panels from door-to-door salespeople causes significant consumer harm due to the consistent misleading of consumers, huge solar system mark-ups and the tendency for these individuals to pressure low-income consumers. This is particularly evidenced by a scam in 2017 where door-to-door salespeople were scamming consumers in Victoria using the Renew Energy name. It is for these reasons that consumers should remain aware when approached by non-certified solar retailers.

Re: Solar Installation
The admin staff were professional and helpful, the quote was competitive, the system works but workmanship was very poor. They used sub contractors to do the install who really didn't care. To their credit the supervisor sent the sub contractors back who fixed everything I took issue with, but you can't do much with extra holes in the face brickwork, and the sub contractors didn't mind telling me that they had done nothing wrong.
I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Renew Energy to anyone who is looking for truly excellent provision and service. We found dealing with them to be really impressive, in fact our best experience in years. The technical advise was comprehensive and addressed our needs accurately, the team who installed our system were skilled, professional, on time and cleaned up perfectly afterwards which is rare these days. A
genuinely caring, professional highly skilled team of people who displayed honesty and integrity from start to finish. We are grateful.
Happy to say I had a good experience with this company. The consultant was polite and knowledgeable and gave me options for a system that I had not considered once he actually came to my house and looked at our previous set up and trees. Others I got quotes from did not even bother to book a time to come to site so in the end I paid more for system that is perfect for our yard setup. The crew they sent to do the work were excellent. I have an old jarrah house and he took the time to pre-drill the holes so my weatherboards would not split unlike other so called tradesmen. Over all very happy and happy to recommend.
Very professional company to deal with. We were very happy with the whole process. This was replacement of an older, faulty unit (not a Rheem system). The installation was completed on the day that was arranged. The installation technicians arrived on time, were very pleasant and professional and the work was done efficiently and quickly. The old unit was taken away and the new hot water system was working straight away, with solar heated water the following day. We are very pleased with the performance of the system. We have recently (in the warmer weather) been able to turn off the gas booster heater and still have plenty of solar heated hot water. I would be very happy to recommend Renew Energy to any other potential customers.
Renew installed my Grandma's new hot water system recently, they were very friendly and prompt with the install. They took away all the rubbish and left everything very neat and tidy. My Grandma is very pleased with her new system!
