The technology for solar panels originated in the United States, and it remains the country that holds most of the patents for solar technology. Between 2008 and 2013, however, the United States was superseded as the biggest producer of panels as China began to mass-produce solar panels for domestic and international use. In this time, China mass producing these solar-electric panels dropped the prices of world panels by 80 percent.
Should you avoid panels made in China?
China is now the biggest manufacturer of solar panels in the world and builds many of the panels used by international brands. This does not mean that solar panels are exclusively produced in China; instead, The United States remains a large manufacturer of solar panels, and countries as diverse as Germany, Japan, Taiwan and Mexico prove that solar panel manufacture still occurs on a diverse scale globally.
Regardless of the country in which panels are manufactured, the quality of the panel is often determined by the quality assurance of the manufacturers themselves. This means that there is no correlation between country of manufacture and the resulting quality. As an example of this, Hyundai produces solar panels in China – their manufacturing processes are intentionally lower to produce a product that is of a lower quality, but also cheaper. A company like Canadian Solar, however, also produces panels in China but their improved quality assurance results in a product that is superior to that of Hyundai.
High Quality Solar Panel Manufacturing
Although most solar panel manufacturers intentionally produce panels of a relatively standard quality, SunPower is the only brand that approaches manufacturing with premium quality in mind. This is a contributing reason for SunPower’s solar panels being some of the absolute best available in the market today. SunPower manufacture their panels in China, Mexico and the Philippines, which further goes to show that panels manufactured in China can be on an exceedingly high quality depending on the company leading the manufacturing.
To summarise, we want to ensure consumers remain mindful that although you may hear horror stories of poor quality solar panels being produced in China, this does not reflect Chinese manufacturing as a whole, and rather reflects the company involved. To ensure you receive the highest quality solar panels and equipment possible, make sure to do your research regarding the brand itself, not the place of manufacture.
